The Payroll Software and Services Group (PSSG) has moved into an old Malings Pottery building on Hoults Yard, Byker. The building is the former Malings railway station for loading train wagons with pottery, and has undergone a £750,000 conversion by Hoults Yard to a specification from PSSG into an ultra-modern office space.
PSSG incorporates four companies including Cintra, a Newcastle based company that has been providing payroll, HR and software outsourcing services for 40 years. Cintra became part of PSSG in 2019 when the parent company was created with financial backing from private equity company Tenzing.
PSSG employs more than 170 people across its four subsidiaries – Cintra, Trace Payroll, Una Terra and Online Payrolls – with offices in Newcastle, London, Bristol and Bournemouth.
PSSG CEO Eric Dunmore said: “Payroll is a fantastic product, because it’s got very natural add-ons – HR, recruitment, onboarding, human capital management – so it’s a natural core service to add product extensions to.
“More and more companies are outsourcing functionality from their head office, therefore, our belief is the outsourcing world will grow.”

PSSG’s move from Gateshead to their new 15,000sq ft workspace is part of a £4m investment plan that also includes new products and accelerated software development. PSSG’s Cintra team of 130 has already moved into its new office.
Eric added: “Our new workspace is something special and includes a restaurant area, showers and eight board/meeting rooms – as well as three large open-plan office environments. We looked at eight or nine different places but once we saw Hoults Yard we knew we’d found the right place.”
“We were very particular about the design and layout – we were looking for modern, flexible office space with character to rent in order to create the right working environment suited to a modern software business.
“Hoults Yard and Charlie Hoult (MD at Hoults Yard parent company HyHubs) agreed to fit out the workspace and have absolutely delivered on what we wanted and I know the PSSG team will be very happy here.
We’re a very ambitious company and another advantage of being on Hoults Yard is that there is space for us to grow.”
And PSSG is growing: “When the business was created our turnover was £11m, by next March our turnover will be £14m,” explained Eric.
More than 1,280 clients use PSSG software – with more than 1.6m salaries paid through the software and £3.1bn of salary payments processed annually. Clients come from a range of sectors including education, hospitality and insurance – and from across the UK and around the world.
